I’m a rescue animal-owning, art-making, creative communicator who made the decision to live and work in regional NSW almost 30 years ago.
Born and bred on the plains of Coonamble in north-west NSW, where I spent my early years glued to the back of horses, I knew that even after completing my secondary and tertiary education in the big smoke (Sydney) that my heart belonged in the country.
Despite being terrified of public speaking and being painfully shy as a child, I ended up working in radio – community radio and ABC Rural – after falling in love with the medium when studying Journalism in Sydney in the early 1990s.
After securing my dream job with ABC Radio and being the first ABC Rural Reporter at the Dubbo-based Western Plains studios for four years, I left to work for myself as a freelancer and consultant.
Today, I utilise three decades of media, networking, facilitating, adult training, public speaking, and marketing strategy implementation to deliver tailored, practical communications solutions across a broad range of traditional and digital media channels, sharing the stories of rural and regional Australia across the country and the globe.
Over the past two decades, I’ve also been a farmer, producing prime lambs and winter cereals with my family on a property 60km north-west of Dubbo, as well as doing a brief stint in a couple of roles with regional arts board, Orana Arts, to help bring in more income during what was known as the Millenium Drought…and yes, I did feed sheep from the back of a ute for several years.
It was also during this time I picked up a paintbrush after a long hiatus, going to on to establish a regional artist collective (Fresh Arts Inc.), an online visual arts business (Where is the Art), and a practice as an exhibiting artist with five solo shows and more than 20 groups exhibitions over the next decade.
Today, I tap into my passion and knowledge of digital mediums to work as a digital media and sensory installation artist for special projects, commissions and festival programs. There’s more about this and my creative life on my other website.
Over the years I also have kept my hand in as a print journalist, writing for art blogs and feature stories for regional news magazines.
